In the cloud computing era, collaboration and resource sharing are essential. AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM) is a service designed to streamline this process, allowing us to share our AWS resources with any AWS account or through AWS Organizations. In this blog post, we’ll break down what AWS RAM is, how it works, and why it’s beneficial for our cloud architecture.

What is AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM)?

AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM) is a service that helps us easily and securely share AWS resources with other accounts or within our organization. It eliminates the need for duplicate resources, reducing costs and simplifying management. With RAM, we can share a wide range of resources, such as Subnets, Transit Gateways, Route 53 Resolver rules, and more, without having to resort to resource replication or complex management tasks.

How Does AWS RAM Work?

The process of sharing resources using AWS RAM is straightforward:

  1. Resource Owner: This is the AWS account that owns the resource we want to share. As the resource owner, we initiate the sharing process by selecting the resource and specifying who we want to share it with.
  2. Resource Share: Through AWS RAM, we create a resource share, which is essentially a container for the resources we’re sharing and the AWS accounts (or organizational units) we’re sharing them with.
  3. Resource Consumer: The accounts we’ve shared the resource with are the consumers. Once the share is accepted, these accounts can access and use the shared resource as if it were in their own account, subject to the permissions we’ve defined.

Steps to Share a Resource:

  1. Select the Resource: In the AWS RAM console, choose the resource we want to share.
  2. Create a Resource Share: Name our resource share and add the AWS accounts, organizational units, or email addresses associated with the accounts with which we want to share the resource.
  3. Define Permissions: Set the permissions for the shared resource to control what the recipients can and cannot do with it.
  4. Send Invitations: AWS RAM sends invitations to the specified accounts. The invitees must accept the invitation to access the shared resource.

  • Cost Efficiency: By sharing resources, we can avoid unnecessary costs associated with duplicating resources across accounts.
  • Simplified Management: Centralize shared resource management, making monitoring and managing access and usage easier.
  • Security and Compliance: AWS RAM ensures that all resource sharing complies with AWS security and compliance standards. We retain control over who accesses our resources and how they use them.
  • Flexibility and Scalability: Share resources across accounts and AWS Organizations, allowing for flexible collaboration and scalability as our organization grows or changes.

  • Multi-account Environments: Share resources across different accounts within our organization to improve operational efficiency and resource utilization.
  • Collaboration with External Parties: Share specific resources with partners or customers while maintaining control over our AWS environment.
  • Centralized Resource Management: Manage resources centrally in a shared services account and grant access to other accounts as needed.
